IVF with cryopreserved sperm is an in vitro fertilisation programme involving previously frozen – cryopreserved – sperm. Prior to fertilisation, sperm is defrosted and additional activities performed aiming at activation of sperm, and after that the embryologist examines recovered sperm and selects the most promising ones for fertilisation of the ovum. If a single spermatozoon cryopreservation was carried out, the selection process is optimised, since only 1 spermatozoon is stored in each container, so the task of the embryologist is to assess its viability after exposure to low temperatures.
Indications for IVF with cryopreserved sperm
Cryopreservation of spermatozoa has significant benefits for families in where men are diagnosed with severe sperm pathology and a microsurgery was assigned in order to obtain the male germ cells. In this case, physicians recommend to cryopreserve the obtained sperm to prevent reintervention if the IVF programme will not result in pregnancy and another cycle of treatment will be required.
If the use donor's sperm is recommended for fertilisation and the family has decided to accept cells of an anonymous donor fr om a sperm bank, IVF shall be performed only with cryopreserved sperm.
IVF with cryopreserved sperm must also be carried out, if a man preserved his cells beforehand expecting the treatment that might adversely affect his reproductive capabilities.
Another indication for such cryo programme is the anticipated long absence of a man during the IVF programme and follicular puncture. If a man is about to take a business trip (e.g. for a period of more than two weeks) he should inform the consultant physician/fertility specialist in order to donate sperm in advance so the treatment programme would be in accordance with the plan.
IVF with cryopreserved sperm at MAMA Riga Clinic
In our clinic, we successfully perform in vitro fertilisation using cryopreserved sperm of both our patients and anonymous donors. To preserve sperm, we utilise both traditional sperm cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen and the cryopreservation of individual spermatozoa in cryospheres – an exclusive technology created and patented by MAMA Clinic.
When conducting IVF programme, this sperm is used in cases wh ere a man is unable to be present at the Clinic on the day of the puncture. Cryopreserved spermatozoa are also used if a man became infertile during the sperm's storage period in cryobank. Donor sperm is used in male infertility in couples, as well as is high risk of transmission of hereditary diseases from a man exists. For a woman, IVF programmes with cryopreserved sperm do not differ from the standard programmes.
The experience of our team of physicians and embryologists allows to achieve high results in infertility treatment by using cryo programmes. The frequency of pregnancy occurring is comparable to and sometimes even higher than that of IVF without cryo technologies.
