A spermogram is a sperm analysis and a basic examination to assess the reproductive capacity of a male. The spermogram is necessary in order to exclude the male's infertility factor in a couple. MAR-test (Mixed Antiglobulin Reaction) is an additional examination of ejaculate allowing to diagnose immunological infertility in a family. MAR-test results provide an accurate picture of the number of promising sperm ready for artificial insemination and the cells with antisperm antibodies, i.e. those unable to fertilise an egg.
The spermogram analysis and MAR-test are necessary for every man when planning pregnancy in a couple. If the desired pregnancy hasn't been achieved within 6-12 months provided the regular sex life without the use of contraceptives, a man should undergo the spermogram with MAR-test as a part of the check-up in order to diagnose potential causes of infertility in a couple. Sperm testing is assigned by the andrologist or fertility specialist in all the following cases:
In MAMA Riga Clinic, we always perform the advanced examination of ejaculate that includes both the spermogram and MAR-test. Both check-ups are an integral part of a male's examination, whether to identify the possible causes of infertility or create an IVF programme that will help conceive, carry and give birth to a healthy baby in your couple.
In our Clinic, the spermogram and MAR testing of sperm allow us to evaluate the following parameters of ejaculate:
Results of the spermogram and MAR-test are informative for the necessity of assigning further examinations and in order to choose the method of achieving pregnancy in couples. For our experienced physicians, spermogram parameters may serve as a starting point for the necessary genetic diagnosis of a male and future pre-implantation genetic diagnosis of embryos in the case of confirmation of the pathology.
If you need to pass the spermogram with MAR-test, in preparation for the examination you should refrain from ejaculation for 3-5 days and consuming alcohol for 7 days, abandon the intake of potent medicines at least 1 week before sperm donation, as well avoid visiting sauna and taking a hot bath at least 5 days before analysis. Violation of these rules may lead to a change in semen and non-credible results of the spermogram and MAR-test analysis. If you fail to comply with all the conditions necessary, please inform the appropriate medical specialist and postpone the examination date.
MAMA RIGA Clinic provides a wide range of services in the field of diagnostics of the causes of male infertility. We have our own laboratory, and our specialists have the high qualification and extensive experience in the diagnostics and treatment of male infertility.
MAMA RIGA Clinic has a specially equipped comfortable men's room for sperm donation. According to the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO), masturbation is the best way to collect sperm. For all other types of collection, there are many shortcomings. For example, if you collect your sperm in a condom, the results of the analysis will contain the lubrication material having a negative impact on sperm movement, so such data may be incorrect. Coitus interruptus is also not desirable, because in doing so you may fail to collect the entire analysis, which in turn can affect the sperm's quality parameters. A maximally accurate spermogram is obtained by masturbating directly in the clinic where it will be further examined.
